Mary Astor was a very under-appreciated actress. She admits herself to shying away from star billing to remain a feature player so as not to have too much resting on her shoulders. Her story here chronicles her career from the beginning up until the late 50's where she was back into success on stage and TV after struggling through alcoholism. For example in confronting a holiday without family in the early 1950s, she finally came to terms with her alcoholism and ``neediness.'' She writes (page 319), ``It was a good place to say, 'The hell with it,' and blot out Thanksgiving Day and country girl memories of the succulent bird, and families gathered in warmth and love and prayer-- tenth-rate thinking leading inevitably. Actress Mary Astor is brutally honest in her autobiography about her life, her marriages, and her struggles with alcoholism. Published in 1959, Astor doesn't actually talk that much about her film work; this seems to have been more of a therapeutic writing exercise for her.
